Why Should I Insulate My Water Lines?

Living in Illinois, the weather can be unpredictable, ranging from sweltering heat to polar vortex winds causing temperatures to tumble below zero.

Insulating cold water pipes helps protect against freezing which can cause breaks in the lines and damage your property. Cold water pipes absorb heat and during the winter they will draw heat from the space around them, assuming this space is insulated. Finally, cold water pipes can collect moisturized air, which creates condensation. Condensed water can drip on the floor, creating stains and other damage.

Although hot water pipes aren’t likely to freeze, you want the hot water to retain as much heat as possible on its journey from the hot water heater to your shower, dishwasher, or other fixture. Insulation helps you keep your water hot!

Insulating your pipes can also reduce pests. Tiny insects such as silverfish, earwigs and even cockroaches can be attracted to the water condensation found on pipes.

A benefit to energy efficiency can be found by insulating your water lines reducing the amount of energy used to heat the water.

Water line insulation is a prudent and purposeful way to not only protect your home, but help lower your utility bills. At Classic Plumbing & Air, we can help insulate and protect your water lines. Call us today at (217) 586-7473.
